Healths staff in Kisii have issued a strike notice to the County for what they termed as growing threats to their work.

Some threats, stated KMPDU officials, involve the stalking of local union officials by suspected goons.

During a press conference Monday evening at a Kisii hotel they health vowed to stage a strike on 4th March if their grievances are not addressed.

They described the as ‘chaotic and requiring critical intervention the working system in the devolved unit’ .

“We are perturbed and dismayed by the County government in choosing to disrupt services , arbitrarily demoting and transfering staff. It is a shame,” said George Gibore, Kenya Nation Union of Clinical officers Secretary General.

They accused Governor Simba Arati of presiding over the mess in the devolved unit’s health care system .

” I think the people of Kisii are peaceful. If you chose to attack even a health worker, sending goons to trail him of what good is such a system?,” posed Gibore posed during the evening press conference at a Kisii hotel.

KMPDU National Secretary General Dr Dalji Chatela described as shameful that medical staff in Kisii , especially union officials, were being targeted for harassment for fighting for the welfare of staff.

“As a union we are not only disturbed but also dismayed by the level of insecurity our members are constantly exposed to as they go about their work in Kisii

” For the last two years we have witnessed cases where doctors who are doing work and when they get sick their salaries are stopped arbitrarily. The specialists are also working in very poor conditions,” stated Chatella.

Already the several health staff, among them doctors, had been denied study leaves while others were being transfered to remote dispensaries where their services were least needed, the union official said .

” Today we are issuing a 14 day strike notice to Kisii County that will commence on 4th of March, 2924 if the issues raised would not be addressed.

The strike would only be shelved if all doctors arbitrary sacked and salary withheld are reinstated.

“We are not begging as a union but demanding that these issues must be addressed before 4th March,” he told journalists.

During early deliberations the doctors lamented of being tossed left right and Centre by the County.

“You go to school, return to serve your people but you are designated to serve where your services are least needed,” he said.

The frustration, he said is deep and intense among many of the specialists working in the region.

Other medics said they have gone for over 17 months without pay forcing their children off school .

Some health staff said they had not been considered for promotions despite attending promotion interviews several months down the line .

A senior union official said he has been stalked severally by suspected goons as he left for home .

He has since reported the incident to the police

Another one said they are a depressed lot especially being hunted in town with goons.

“We are overly seeing poor health services for poor Kenyans,” she stated.

Some officers erroneously removed from payroll have been subjecting them to unnecessary suffering, she said.

NHIF

Health Cabinet Secretary Nakhumicha S. Wafula disclosed Friday that the government has identified facilities that have been defrauding the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF).

The CS says an audit recently carried out by the Social Health Authority (SHA) reveals shocking details of hospitals that dishonestly pocket billions of shillings of taxpayers’ money through fictitious claims.

“Between January and December 2023, out of 67 audited hospitals, 27 were found to be involved in fraudulent activities, resulting in a loss of Kes 171 million,” she said

“Extrapolating this to the total population of 8,886 hospitals, it is estimated that approximately 3,440 might have been engaged in fraudulent activities, potentially exceeding Kes 20 billion in losses from about 40% fraudulent hospitals. Luckily 60% carry out clean business,” Nakhumicha explained

According to the CS, the facilities in question employed numerous tricks to defraud the Fund.

One such scheme is where patients have been enticed into unnecessary medical procedures, exploiting their vulnerabilities.

“Instances of induced sickness have been uncovered, wherein facilities deceitfully activate dormant accounts of members, financing medically unwarranted treatments,” said the CS

While justifying reform of the fund, Nakhumicha says fictitious records, manufactured claims, and deceptive practices, such as falsely indicating members undergoing major surgeries while actively at work, have all contributed to defrauding the Fund.

“Disturbingly, some hospitals have targeted groups of security guards from licensed security firms, financially inducing them to provide biometrics for fraudulent purposes,” she said

“Anomalies have also been identified, including facilities conducting an exceptionally high number of eye surgeries in a day, ranging from 10 to 22, in facilities with a capacity of only 2 per day while lacking adequate theatre capacity. Such discrepancies raise significant doubts about the legitimacy of claims and the resources available at these facilities,” she charged

Problem with Edu Afya

At the same time, the CS highlighted corruption in Edu Afya, a comprehensive medical scheme that was previously meant for all public secondary students.

“Under the EduAfya cover, healthcare facilities have been enticing healthy students, providing food incentives for their biometrics that result in high financial losses,” she said

“Additionally, cases involving nurses stationed in schools collecting biometrics of non-ill students to lodge fictitious claims have been unearthed, significantly exploiting the scheme,” stated the CS

Nakhumicha says all facilities linked to fraud in NHIF have been suspended.

Screening is the use of technology such as a mammogram to detect whether one has cancer cells. Mammogram is an X-ray for breasts, it is detects early stages of breast cancer when it is easy to treat and before it is big enough to feel or cause symptoms.

Regular cancer screens and tests can help prevent cancer from advancing and spreading to the rest of the body.
2. Self Examination for Breast Awareness.
Women who are at a larger risk of getting cancer are encouraged self examine themselves.

These examinations helps to check the size of the breast whether it is enlarged. Also, the cross checks help to determine the physical appearance of the nipple and whether it is reddish or has some abnormal and blood-like fluid coming out from the nipples.

The country is reckoning on their elected leaders to work on delivering their pledges. Some arid communities are facing a drought season even with the forthcoming el-nino. Government intervention will save a life in many communities.

                          In conclusion

In conclusion, Suicide Awareness Prevention Month serves as a crucial reminder of the ongoing battle against depression, mental health challenges, and the increasing threats of suicide. As we reflect on the impact of depression on individuals and communities, it becomes evident that addressing this issue requires a multifaceted approach. Socioeconomic stressors, including unemployment and economic instability, play a significant role in exacerbating mental health issues.

To combat these challenges, it’s imperative that both individuals and governments take action. Providing mental health support, job opportunities, and addressing issues such as corruption and drought can go a long way in alleviating the burden on vulnerable communities. As we work together to raise awareness and seek solutions, we move one step closer to a society where mental health is a top priority, and the risk of suicide is significantly reduced.

What is endometriosis?

by Rofina Media

Endometriosis is a condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (the endometrium) grows outside of the uterus. This tissue can grow in other parts of the body, such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes, bladder, and bowel.

Endometriosis is a chronic condition that can cause pain, infertility, and other health problems. It is estimated that 1 in 10 women of reproductive age have endometriosis.

What causes endometriosis?

The exact cause of endometriosis is unknown, but there are a few theories. One theory is that retrograde menstruation, which is the flow of menstrual blood back through the fallopian tubes and into the abdomen, can cause endometrial tissue to implant in other parts of the body.

Another theory is that the immune system plays a role in endometriosis. The immune system may not recognize the endometrial tissue as foreign and attack it, causing inflammation and pain.

Symptoms of endometriosis

The symptoms of endometriosis can vary from woman to woman. Some common symptoms include:

  • Painful periods
  • Pain during sex
  • Painful bowel movements or urination
  • Fatigue
  • Infertility

Diagnosis of endometriosis

There is no single test for endometriosis. The diagnosis is made based on a woman’s symptoms, a physical exam, and imaging tests.

Imaging tests that can be used to diagnose endometriosis include:

  • Transvaginal ultrasound
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Laparoscopy

Treatment for endometriosis

There is no cure for endometriosis, but there are treatments that can help to relieve symptoms and improve quality of life.

The type of treatment that a woman receives will depend on her symptoms, the severity of her disease, and her fertility goals.

Treatment options for endometriosis include:

  • Pain medication
  • Hormonal therapy
  • Surgery

Pain medication

Pain medication can help to relieve the pain associated with endometriosis. Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or naproxen, can be helpful for mild pain. Prescription pain medications, such as opioids, may be necessary for more severe pain.

Hormonal therapy

Hormonal therapy can help to suppress the growth of endometrial tissue. Common hormonal therapies for endometriosis include:

  • Oral contraceptives
  • Progesterone-only pills
  • Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists

Surgery

Surgery may be an option for women with severe endometriosis or who have not responded to other treatments. There are different types of surgery that can be used to treat endometriosis, including:

  • Laparoscopy: This is a minimally invasive surgery that is performed through small incisions in the abdomen.
  • Hysterectomy: This surgery removes the uterus.
  • Oophorectomy: This surgery removes the ovaries.

Living with endometriosis

Endometriosis can be a challenging condition to live with. However, there are many things that women can do to manage their symptoms and improve their quality of life.

Some tips for living with endometriosis include:

  • Get regular exercise. Exercise can help to reduce pain and improve overall health.
  • Eat a healthy diet. Eating a healthy diet can help to reduce inflammation and improve overall health.
  • Get enough sleep. Getting enough sleep is important for overall health and well-being.
  • Manage stress. Stress can worsen symptoms of endometriosis. Find healthy ways to manage stress, such as yoga, meditation, or spending time in nature.
  • Talk to your doctor. If you are struggling to manage your symptoms, talk to your doctor. There are many treatment options available, and your doctor can help you find the best option for you.

Endometriosis is a chronic condition that can cause pain, infertility, and other health problems. There is no cure for endometriosis, but there are treatments that can help to relieve symptoms and improve quality of life. If you think you may have endometriosis, talk to your doctor. With the right treatment, you can manage your symptoms and live a full and productive life.
