A Nairobi court has arraigned a woman accused of orchestrating a multi-million shilling fake tender scam involving the supply of laptops to a government ministry.
Joy Wangari Kamau appeared before Milimani Senior Resident Magistrate Joan Mati, where she denied three counts of conspiracy to commit a felony, obtaining money by false pretences, and forgery.
The court heard that between September 4 and December 30, 2023, at an unknown place within Nairobi County, Kamau, jointly with others already before the court, allegedly conspired to steal USD 398,000 (approximately Sh 60 million) from Vija Virma.
She is accused of falsely pretending that she was in a position to secure a tender for the supply of laptops and other accessories to the Ministry of Information, Communication and Digital Economy under reference number MICT/VOL. 1/VACC/2023-1, a claim the prosecution says she knew to be false.
Additionally, the court heard that she allegedly obtained the said amount from the complainant with intent to defraud using the same misrepresentation.
Kamau also faces another forgery, with the prosecution alleging that on November 1, 2023, she jointly with others not before court forged a request for quotation bearing the same tender reference number, purporting it to be a genuine document from the ministry.
The court released her on a bond of Sh3 million or an alternative cash bail of Sh1 million.
The matter will be mentioned on 15th April.
