Lang’ata MP Phelix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalango, has threatened to take legal action against the Citizen Weekly newspaper. In a Facebook post on Tuesday, September 12, Jalango accused the newspaper of publishing a defamatory story about him and then calling him to extort money in exchange for removing the story.

“Rogue media must be dealt with!” Jalango wrote. “After the steps I want to take against Citizen Weekly, I don’t think they will ever sit down and write a defamatory story on anyone again, then call to extort you in the name of ‘we will clean your name!’ I’ll not fall for that nonsense! Good day!”

The Citizen Weekly has not yet responded to Jalango’s allegations. However, the newspaper has a history of publishing investigative journalism that has often been critical of powerful figures. In 2020, the newspaper was sued by President Uhuru Kenyatta for defamation over a story about his alleged involvement in a corruption scandal. The case is still pending in court.

It is unclear what legal action Jalango intends to take against the Citizen Weekly. However, his threats have raised concerns about the safety of journalists in Kenya. In recent years, there has been a rise in attacks on journalists, with many of the perpetrators going unpunished.

The Kenya Editors’ Guild has condemned Jalango’s threats, calling them “an attack on press freedom.” The guild said that it will “stand with the Citizen Weekly and all journalists in Kenya who are working to uphold the right to free speech.”

The case between Jalango and the Citizen Weekly is likely to be closely watched by journalists and media freedom advocates in Kenya. The outcome of the case could have a significant impact on the ability of journalists to report freely and without fear of reprisal.
