Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has already started engaging with the Japan International Development Agency (JICA) for the third phase of the upgrading project at the Mombasa port.
The authority’s managing director, Captain William Ruto, has disclosed that currently, the Terminal Operating System (TOS) is undergoing upgrading plans.
Captain Ruto said the process will start in January 2025 and aims to increase capacity at the Port of Mombasa.
“The authority has awarded a tender for the construction of Berth 19 billion, which has a design length of 240 meters and 300,000 TEUs of capacity,” he disclosed.
Captain Ruto said in addition the authority has already started engaging the Japan International Development Agency (JICA) for the third phase of the implementation of the Mombasa Port Development Project (MPDP) construction of Berth 23.
Ruto said activities at the port of Mombasa have witnessed a rise in cargo volumes, especially during the festive season in Mombasa County.
KPA indicated it is engaging the JICA for the third phase of implementation to ensure the port can handle a total of 41 vessels before the end of the festive season, with the number expected to rise.
He added that the vessel calls are attributed to the major shipping lines adding six feeder vessels to link regional ports with global shipping networks.
