The High Court has heard chilling details of blood-stained items, syringes, and CCTV footage showing a person fleeing a South B apartment, as police officers testified in the murder trial of socialite Starlet Wahu.
Investigating officer Alex Chokera in the Starlet Wahu case told the court that he recovered multiple exhibits from the short-stay unit at Papino Apartments, house number Y32, where Wahu was found dead. Among the items he listed were a kitchen knife with blood stains, a white towel with blood marks, HIV test kits, used and unused condoms, eight syringes, and assorted tablets, some of which appeared to have been taken.
Chokera said a black handbag found in the room contained a passport and two mobile phones, one Samsung and another unbranded. He also recovered a black wig, a black cap, black open-heeled ladies’ shoes, undergarments, and an empty bottle of Hunters alcoholic drink. Blood swabs were collected from inside and outside the room before the body was removed to the City Mortuary by officers from the Industrial Area Police Station.
The officer further told the court that he proceeded to the apartment’s CCTV control room, where footage showed a person leaving house Y32 and exiting the building. He said the individual appeared to be wearing jeans and a wig similar to one of the items recovered from the house.
Investigations led police to the owner of the BNB, Florence Ngina, who informed officers that the house had been booked by a person identified as John Matara. Chokera testified that the house had been locked with a padlock from inside and the key was missing and that he could not establish who locked the door. The CCTV footage was later forwarded to DCI headquarters for extraction and produced in court, while the recovered items were sent to the government chemist for analysis.
The court also heard from Corporal Horace Arwa of South B Police Station, who said he traced a man linked to the case to a hospital where he was receiving treatment.
Arwa told the court that during questioning, the man stated he had been with the deceased and that they had a scuffle, during which he stabbed her on the right thigh. The officer said he did not continue the interrogation because medical personnel were attending to him at the time.
He added that the man had multiple injuries, though he could not confirm their nature while he was being treated, and that hospital staff was informed he was under murder investigation.
